What is GST?

GST is the tax on the consumption of goods and services and is implemented as an indirect tax for the sale of goods and services. It is taken in by businesses and paid to the government. GST is implemented in several countries. Even if the GST rates vary, the method of calculation remains consistent.

GST Formula (Universal Method)

There are two main types of GST calculations:

1- Add GST to a Price (Exclusive GST):

If GST is not included in the original price:

GST Amount = (Original Price × GST Rate) ÷ 100
Final Price = Original Price + GST Amount

Example:

Original price = 500
GST rate = 10%

GST = (500 × 10) ÷ 100 = 50
Final price = 500 + 50 = 550

2- Remove GST from a Price (Inclusive GST)

If the total price already includes GST:

GST Amount = (Inclusive Price × GST Rate) ÷ (100 + GST Rate)
Original Price = Inclusive Price − GST Amount

Example:

Inclusive price = 550
GST rate = 10%

GST = (550 × 10) ÷ 110 = 50
Original price = 550 − 50 = 500
